Primary and Secondary Data

Primary data are real-time data collected by researchers directly from main sources in prospective studies, while secondary data relates to the past and are previously collected data made available for researchers to use for their own retrospective studies.

What is Primary Data Collection?

Primary data are data collected in real time to address a particular research problem or hypothesis, where data collected by researchers come directly from main sources in prospective studies.

The national census is a primary data example, where data collected by the government are used to give a head count of everyone in the country on a given day.

If you are collecting data using a survey, a questionnaire or a personal interview, these are also primary data examples.

The main advantages of primary data collection in research are that the data are specific to the needs of the researcher and are usually more accurate and/or up-to-date than secondary data collection, but they can be very time-consuming and expensive to collect.
